Talks to proceed with three firms wanting to partner with TelEm

~ TelEm to propose formation of negotiations team ~

PHILIPSBURG--Discussions will proceed with three of the seven firms that submitted bids to partner with the TelEm Group of Companies.

This was one of several issues discussed when Telecommunications Commissioner William Marlin met with Chairman of the TelEm Board Rafael Boasman and Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Helma Etnel Sunday.

The TelEm Group is also expected to propose to the Executive Council the appointment of a five-man negotiating team and a steering committee to proceed with the talks.

Marlin said late Sunday this proposal was expected to be submitted to the Executive Council for decision-making.

The five-person committee will consist of one person each appointed by the TelEm Group's management, the TelEm board and the Executive Council, as well as by a company versed in the issue of strategic partnering, and an attorney to ensure that the process proceeds correctly, Marlin said.

"Once the negotiating team is appointed, this team will do its work and will give feedback to the commissioner, who will be the link between the negotiating team and the shareholder – Government."

At Sunday's meeting, Boasman and Etnel made a PowerPoint presentation on their position on proceeding with the partnering of the TelEm Group.

The issue of TelEm seeking a strategic partner to ensure its sustainability has been emphasised over the years by several commissioners who held responsibility for telecommunications.

Marlin said Government had "not too long ago" taken the decision to continue with the search for a strategic partner, and seven companies had submitted bids to this end.
